Architectural Vision
In 2020, Atelier Guy Architectes undertook the design of the SmartMill head office and factory, embodying the company’s commitment to next-generation automated systems for the wood-processing industry. The primary objective of the project was to realize a building with an all-timber structure, reflecting SmartMill’s ethos of sustainability and innovation, while providing functional, comfortable, and inviting spaces.
Integrating Sustainability
The design ethos of SmartMill’s new headquarters is rooted in sustainability, evident in the use of local wood and products across various levels of the project. This conscious choice not only aligns with the company’s values but also underscores its commitment to environmental stewardship.
Architectural Layout
Spanning approximately 2,000 square meters, the facility comprises an administrative pavilion facing the street and a factory section extending into the backyard. Central to the design is a vibrant outdoor courtyard enveloped by greenery, flooding adjacent spaces with natural light. The administrative pavilion features expansive windows facilitating a seamless connection with the courtyard, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor environments.
Structural Innovation
The administrative section stands out for its transparency and lightweight structure, characterized by three large triangulated sections of glued-laminated timber elements. This column-free design not only enhances spatial flexibility but also contributes to the architectural identity of the project, subtly echoing the SmartMill logo.
Factory Environment
The factory space, directly connected to the administrative section, boasts an impressive arched roof supported by long curved glued-laminated timber trusses. This design allows for column-free spans, optimizing the floor area for production activities. High ceilings accommodate overhead cranes, essential for operations, while a wide horizontal window at the top of the workshop enhances the quality of the work environment.
Materiality and Texture
Eastern white cedar, a durable and locally sourced material, dominates the building’s exterior cladding, ensuring longevity and low maintenance. Board and batten sidings add texture to the facade, creating interplays of light and shadow that animate the building’s exterior. These design choices serve as a testament to the versatility and richness of wood, reflecting SmartMill’s innovative approach to timber construction.
In conclusion, the SmartMill Head Office by Atelier Guy Architectes exemplifies a harmonious fusion of sustainability, innovation, and architectural excellence. By seamlessly integrating timber construction with functional design elements, the project not only serves as a beacon of environmental responsibility but also sets a new standard for workspace architecture in the wood-processing industry.
