Redefining Retail Experience in Chengdu, China

WE LIVE ARCHITECTS introduces a groundbreaking project in Block B of Luxe Zone, Chengdu, China, aimed at revitalizing the commercial ecosystem by addressing evolving market demands for experiential spaces, cultural identity, and creative expression. Completed in 2023, this project challenges traditional design paradigms to create a dynamic and vibrant commercial area that resonates with the community.

Challenges and Approach

The design team faced three main challenges at the project’s outset. Firstly, the existing open square lacked vibrancy for consumer activities. Secondly, the cold architectural facades needed to be transformed into a lively and dynamic commercial space. Lastly, the standard design approach limited the possibilities for creating an authentic “Owner’s Block” atmosphere. To address these challenges, the team adopted a meticulous “diagnosis” approach before implementing effective strategies to redefine the space.

Design Concept

The project revolves around the concept of the “Owner’s Block,” aiming to create a shelter for individuals with passion, creativity, and a new lifestyle. Through space reorganization and the addition of white structures, the team transformed the block into a versatile canvas for businesses to showcase their design aesthetics and brand personalities. This three-dimensional settlement comprises a surface, line, and point system, offering various outdoor space combinations and encouraging pedestrian engagement.

Systems and Features

The design features lightweight white canopies that lower the height of the space, creating a sheltered gray area for outdoor activities. Linear bar counters and outdoor furniture enrich the second-floor terrace, encouraging interaction and creating a vibrant workplace and living space. Additionally, the plaza is paved with a layer of white matrix, allowing for flexible reorganization by operators.

Human-Centric Design

Unlike traditional static commercial displays, the project focuses on triggering participant behaviors and enhancing the overall retail experience. Owners can claim and decorate flags, trees, and wall stickers, fostering a sense of ownership and community engagement. Moreover, careful consideration was given to the relationship between new and existing structures to ensure project safety and functionality.

Conclusion

The commercial architecture project by WE LIVE ARCHITECTS in Chengdu, China, sets a new standard for retail experiences by prioritizing human-centric design principles and addressing evolving market demands. Through meticulous planning, innovative design solutions, and a focus on community engagement, the project successfully redefines the commercial ecosystem, creating a dynamic and vibrant space that resonates with the modern consumer.
