Superimpose Architecture has unveiled the Sky City TOD hub in Hangzhou, China, marking a significant advancement in Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) within the urban landscape. TOD, a burgeoning urban typology, has gained traction globally, particularly in China, where rapid urbanization necessitates innovative solutions for transportation and urban living.

Integrating Transportation and Urban Design

At the core of TOD is the seamless integration of high-end public transportation stations into mixed-use developments. In the case of Sky City TOD, situated within Hangzhou’s bustling ‘Silicon Valley’ near major e-commerce giants like Alibaba and Tencent, the project encompasses efficient pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly routes alongside the implementation of a new subway station.

Design Concept and Implementation

Designed by Superimpose Architecture for Vanke Hangzhou and the Hangzhou Subway Group, Sky City spans 72,000 square meters, comprising two office towers, four office villas, and retail spaces. Integral to its design is the careful integration of pedestrian routes, creating a unique and green arrival experience for subway commuters. By incorporating the government’s green belt zone and introducing landscape voids, the design maximizes natural light penetration into the basement levels, enhancing the overall commuter experience.

Architectural Expression: The Valley and The Cloud

The architectural narrative of Sky City TOD is defined by ‘The Valley’ and ‘The Cloud’ concepts. ‘The Valley,’ embodied in the podium levels, emphasizes human scale and natural integration with greenery and water elements. Architectural features such as shifting slabs create terraces and canopies, fostering a connection to nature. In contrast, ‘The Cloud,’ represented in the upper levels, adopts a more serene facade approach characterized by perforated aluminum fins for ventilation. The tower’s massing is strategically split by a glass box, catering to special tenant requirements for showroom spaces or unique interior layouts.
