A Haven for Hope
Busajo Campus stands as a beacon of hope for local street children in need of support to rebuild their lives and cultivate self-respect. Hosted for a specific period, these children receive assistance and guidance to navigate life’s challenges and foster respect for themselves and others.
Collaboration for Social Change
Commissioned by Busajo Onlus, a nonprofit organization in Florence, Italy, the project brought together diverse stakeholders dedicated to social causes. AeI progetti, an engineering firm, provided structural expertise, while the construction was entrusted to the local company “Tadesse Fikadu.” Together, they envisioned a comprehensive facility encompassing living quarters, educational spaces, vocational training areas, sports facilities, and recreational zones across 33,500 square meters.
Cultural Sensitivity in Design
A key challenge was creating a space that resonated with the local children’s cultural context. The architectural language of the campus draws inspiration from local building styles but is reinterpreted to foster a sense of order and belonging. By incorporating familiar visual elements, materials, and colors, the design ensures that the children feel connected to their surroundings.
Climate-Responsive Architecture
Given the site’s climate, protecting against heat and rain was imperative. The buildings feature continuous “filter-devices,” covered porches shielded by eucalyptus wood panels, serving as sunscreen grids. Deep roof overhangs and balconies provide consistent shading, contributing to a passive cooling system. These covered spaces also offer shelter during inclement weather, allowing outdoor activities to continue uninterrupted.
Fostering Community and Sustainability
Internal courtyards serve as communal hubs where children can gather, learn, and play in a secure environment. The project emphasizes the use of local materials such as eucalyptus wood and indigenous stone, promoting sustainability and cultural authenticity. Vegetable gardens and animal husbandry spaces promote self-sufficiency, with children actively participating in their management for educational purposes.
Empowering Through Education and Sustainability
Busajo Campus embodies a philosophy of self-sufficiency and empowerment, providing not only shelter but also opportunities for growth and learning. Through collaborative efforts and thoughtful design, the campus offers a nurturing environment where local street children can thrive, reclaim their dignity, and build a brighter future for themselves and their community.
