Elevating the Experience: LVWA Bookstore by Studio YUDA + Studio NOR

The inception of the LVWA Sports Bookstore in Shanghai came as a collaborative effort between Studio YUDA, Studio NOR, and the Shanghai University of Sport alongside the Shanghai Century Publishing (Group) Co., Ltd in 2019. Tasked with designing Shanghai’s first sports-themed bookstore, the architects were challenged to harness the potential of an original base with a 17-meter-high skylight atrium, aiming to create a landmark that transcends conventional bookstore designs.

Mountains of Inspiration

Drawing from the trend of integrating “mountains” into interior projects, the architects sought to imbue the LVWA Sports Bookstore with a unique identity that seamlessly blends sports and literature. Inspired by the adage “the mountain of books has the road and diligence as the path,” the design concept revolves around the motif of a mountain, symbolizing the pursuit of knowledge and physical endurance. This motif not only reflects the essence of sports but also provides a cohesive narrative for the bookstore’s spatial layout.

The Majestic Main Peak

Upon entering the bookstore, visitors are greeted by a transformative experience as they transition from a low-ceilinged space to the expansive atrium. A towering 13-meter-high “main peak” dominates the western wall, resembling a majestic mountain landscape painting. This central feature, named “Mingyue Mountain,” serves as the visual and circulatory focal point of the entire project, guiding visitors through a multi-level exploration of books and space.

A Network of Mountains

Complementing the main peak, the architects scattered 15 smaller “book mountains” throughout the space, each serving as a multifunctional element for shelving, seating, and interaction. Connected by open spaces, these mountains form an interconnected “mountain system,” inviting readers to embark on a journey of discovery and exploration.

A Palette of Colors and Textures

The architects meticulously curated a color palette dominated by blue and gray hues, reflecting the spirit of sports and intellectual pursuit. Warm wood tones and gold accents infuse a sense of coziness and relaxation, creating inviting spaces for rest and contemplation. Perforated panel display racks and flexible furniture arrangements enhance the bookstore’s versatility, accommodating both exhibitions and lectures.

Guiding the Visitor Experience

Strategically placed openings of varying scales encourage fluid movement and sightlines, fostering a dynamic and immersive experience for visitors. As daylight fades, the skylight atrium illuminates the space, casting a warm glow on the scattered ball lights, inviting exploration and discovery in every corner.

Conclusion

The LVWA Sports Bookstore stands as a testament to the innovative fusion of sports and literature, offering a transformative space where knowledge and physicality converge. With its bold design and thoughtful execution, it redefines the traditional bookstore experience, inviting visitors to embark on a journey of intellectual and sensory exploration.
