The House Campo de Ourique project undertaken by Atelier Pupa stands as a tribute to the city’s evolution and its impact on existing structures. Situated amidst the burgeoning modernity of urban development, this apartment found itself flanked by new buildings with garages, reflecting the changing landscape of the neighborhood.
Embracing Historical Legacy
Despite the encroaching modernity, remnants of the area’s rich history remained, bearing witness to its construction and subsequent transformations. The project sought to preserve and revive the essence of the neighborhood, steeped in its unique history and familial identity.
Urgent Intervention
The existing heritage, marred by prolonged neglect, called for urgent intervention to halt its deterioration and ensure its legacy for future generations. Central to the endeavor was the enhancement of existing elements, including intricately worked ceilings, decorative frames, and old crockery cabinets.
Harmonizing Old and New
These historical features were carefully restored and complemented by new additions, such as reinforced iron structures and sleek carpentry, seamlessly integrated to maintain the integrity of the home’s aesthetic. The renovation encompassed a comprehensive overhaul, encompassing walls, floors, and structural elements.
Preservation of Peculiar Materials
Peculiar materials like pinned running boards, stucco crafted with on-site molds, and lioz stone were meticulously preserved and reinstated, imbuing the spaces with a sense of continuity and authenticity.
Creating Contemporary Living Spaces
By reconfiguring spatial layouts and widening pathways, the design fostered a more fluid and contemporary living experience, inviting inhabitants to engage with the space in new and dynamic ways.
A Testament to Urban Evolution
Through a delicate balance of preservation and innovation, the House Campo de Ourique project not only breathes new life into a historic dwelling but also serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of urban evolution and adaptation.
