Introduction to MOMM Apartment
Situated in Berlin-Charlottenburg, MOMM Apartment, spanning 205 square meters and comprising seven rooms, underwent a remarkable metamorphosis under the creative helm of STUDIO LOES. Housed within a residential structure dating back to the early twentieth century, the apartment presented a challenge with its intricate layout and historical architectural elements.
Design Philosophy: “Always along the Firewall”
STUDIO LOES adopted a distinctive approach, centering their design concept around the guiding principle of “always along the firewall.” This ethos dictated the strategic placement of custom-built furniture crafted from wood and natural stone along the apartment’s west side, facilitating a cohesive spatial flow while preserving the integrity of the original architectural features.
Harmonious Integration of Old and New
By skillfully blending contemporary design elements with historic details such as stucco moldings and round arches, STUDIO LOES achieved a harmonious dialogue between tradition and modernity. The built-in wooden fixtures, thoughtfully positioned along the firewall, served as functional focal points while honoring the apartment’s heritage.
Seamless Transitions: From Entrance to Living Spaces
Upon entry, visitors are greeted by light-varnished oak built-ins, seamlessly integrated with the antique stucco molding, creating a nostalgic yet functional ambiance. The kitchen, adorned with minimalist stainless steel shelves and a central island, exudes a modern aesthetic with a focus on efficiency and practicality.
Elegant Connectivity: The Hallway as a Linking Element
A 15-meter-long hallway, adorned with wooden fixtures and recessed cupboards, serves as a graceful link between the living area, kitchen, and dressing room. Clever design elements such as backlit display cabinets and recessed wall niches elevate the hallway into a gallery-like space.
Serene Retreat: The Bathroom and Sauna
In the bathroom, natural stone takes center stage, with Turkish marble slabs meticulously arranged to evoke the imagery of a tranquil watering hole. This motif extends to the sauna, repurposed from a former servants’ stairway, offering a sanctuary of relaxation and rejuvenation.
Conclusion: A Fusion of Functionality and Aesthetics
The MOMM Apartment stands as a testament to STUDIO LOES’ ingenuity and commitment to crafting spaces that seamlessly blend form and function. Through their innovative design solutions, they have reimagined a historic dwelling into a contemporary oasis, where every element tells a story of timeless elegance and modern sophistication.
