Introduction to the Project
Marine House stands as a testament to a pivotal moment of introspection and transformation. In late 2020, the challenge presented was to breathe new life into a dated 1980s compact home, converting it into a sanctuary for a family of six. The vision was to create a bush-inspired yet refined abode, embracing the essence of family living.
Design Concept and Approach
Nestled within a serene gum-lined setting, the design palette sought to evoke a sense of tranquility and whimsy. The original structure, characterized by modest ceilings and pragmatic construction, paved the way for an exploration of horizontal perspectives and expansive, interconnected spaces. A striking addition in the form of a gabled wing for the children’s bedrooms, linked by glazed galleries, seamlessly integrates with the existing structure. The resulting “pinwheel” floor plan artfully delineates public and private realms, fostering a harmonious coexistence between parents and children while capitalizing on the natural vistas surrounding the site.
Louvered Galleries: A Nod to Nostalgia
Drawing inspiration from the owner’s fond memories of louvered beach houses, the design team introduced contemporary louvered galleries. These elements, set within robust Blackbutt timber joinery, pay homage to the timeless charm of seaside retreats. Designed to capture the coastal breeze and illuminate the interiors, the galleries serve as a bridge between past and present, infusing the home with a sense of nostalgia and coastal allure.
Integration of Work and Living Spaces
In response to evolving lifestyle trends, a separate freestanding studio was incorporated into the design. This addition reflects the growing need for dedicated workspaces detached from the main dwelling.
