Situated in the vibrant Alphabet City, The Pool at Hi-Note radio bar embodies the spirit of stoop culture, where communal gathering spaces foster connections among neighbors. Inspired by this ethos, Otazu García Architects conceptualized a dynamic outdoor installation comprising movable artifacts or follies. This innovative design approach allows for versatile configurations, catering to the diverse needs of the bar and its patrons.
Fostering Social Interaction
At the heart of The Pool lies a fixed hexagonal stepped seating arrangement, reminiscent of the stoops that define neighborhood interactions in Alphabet City. This central folly encourages visitors to mingle at different heights, facilitating spontaneous conversations and camaraderie among friends and strangers alike. Complementing this focal point is a mobile stair on casters, enabling fluid spatial transformations for various events, from intimate gatherings to lively concerts.
Creating a Liminal Oasis
Immersed in a sea of blue, The Pool offers a tranquil retreat within the bustling center of Manhattan. Corrugated polycarbonate panels adorn the exterior walls and pergola roof, filtering natural light while preserving privacy during the day. At night, these panels illuminate the space with a mesmerizing play of light and shadow, enhancing the ambiance. Triangular accents atop the walls and pergola evoke a sense of height and openness, harmonizing with the surrounding greenery.
Balancing Visibility and Privacy
The design of The Pool acknowledges the inherent desire of people to both observe and be observed.
