A Collaborative Haven in Kampala
In the heart of Kampala, Uganda, the Kamwokya Community Centre stands as a testament to collaboration. Born from the partnership between the local non-profit Kamwokya Christian Caring Community and the Ameropa Foundation, this architectural marvel is more than a structure—it’s a beacon of hope in one of Uganda’s most impoverished areas.
Preserving the Public Spirit
Conceived with the vision of preserving and elevating the public and free essence of the site, the Kamwokya Community Centre embodies a gentle upliftment rather than imposing structures. The site, managed by the Kamwokya Christian Caring Community, has long been a hub for sports, leisure, and artistic activities. The Centre now stands as a guardian, providing an enhanced space for a myriad of activities such as sports training, spontaneous gatherings, community events, and various classes.
Platform of Possibilities
To counter recurrent flooding challenges during heavy rains, the entire project is ingeniously elevated on a platform. This elevated platform not only safeguards the Centre but also ingeniously divides the space into distinct areas. These variations in level facilitate simultaneous activities without interference. The main sports field, equipped with efficient drainage and shading, is encircled by steps resembling a tribune, offering a vantage point for game-watching and informal gatherings.
Architectural Harmony
The platform hosts two naturally ventilated buildings, featuring a small gym, an internet café, multi-purpose rooms for classes, workshops, a music studio, and an office, complemented by a sanitary block. These spaces are adorned with butterfly roofs raised by steel structures, not just for aesthetics but also to facilitate airflow. This design choice not only grants a unique identity to the Centre but also integrates seamlessly into the urban context of Kampala.

Beyond its functional attributes, the Kamwokya Community Centre aspires to be a catalyst for community transformation.
