Situated 200 kilometers from Buenos Aires in the serene Pampas plains near the city of Pila, the renovation of a modest house on the expansive “El Basson” field presents a blend of modern living with deep familial connections. DRM Arquitectura undertook the project with a focus on enhancing both the functionality and emotional significance of the property.
Integrating Heritage and Modern Use
The primary objective was to adapt the house to new patterns of use, accommodating family growth, gatherings, work meetings, and vacations. The renovation also extended to various elements on the property, such as the mill, water tank, lagoon, and afforestation, ensuring a comprehensive upgrade that honored the site’s history.
Preserving Collective Memory
All preexisting structures were originally designed and inhabited by family members who had passed away, imbuing them with significant symbolic value. The renovation strategy was to maintain a strong connection to the site by preserving these elements, using them as a guide to inform the new architecture. This approach ensured that the updated spaces remained intertwined with the family’s collective memory.
Embracing the Landscape
The flat, expansive landscape of the Pampas influenced the house’s design, dictating its horizontal proportions and the orientation of its gallery and openings. This design not only harmonized with the surroundings but also emphasized the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Structural Enhancements
The original house featured two longitudinal load-bearing walls with transverse wooden beams forming roofs and mezzanines. The renovation expanded on this pattern, exposing the brick walls and integrating wooden beams to create a seamless blend of old and new elements. This approach maintained the rhythm of the original design while introducing new spaces.
Symbolic Materials
Red ceramic, a material deeply ingrained in the family’s memory through the original flooring, was used throughout the renovation. This material connected various elements across the property, including the well, pool, Australian tank, mill, and the house itself, transforming functional areas into inviting family spaces.
Stargazing Lookout
Inspired by the unique rural sky, a stargazing lookout was added as a vertical extension of the house. This structure also provided additional sleeping space and featured a distinctive daylight entry system, enhancing both functionality and aesthetic appeal.
Horizontal Expansions
Two key horizontal expansions completed the renovation. One extended the living and dining area to capture sunset views filtered through a wisteria pergola. The other provided additional shelter for sleeping spaces under the existing tree canopy, complementing the existing north-facing gallery.
Minimalistic Finishing Touches
The renovation concluded with two minimal yet impactful additions: a small pier on the lagoon, facilitating interaction with the water, and the enhancement of a uniquely shaped tree area, which became a focal point for family gatherings. This included the installation of appropriate flooring and furniture, creating a radial landscape intervention around a bonfire area.
