Introduction

Situated amidst the marshy lands on the outskirts of Colombo, Sri Lanka, The Studio House stands as a testament to sustainable architecture tailored to meet the needs of a software engineer client who now works from home. Embracing the ethos of “living big in a small house,” this project prioritizes intentional simplicity, essential needs, and cost minimization to foster a peaceful live-work environment.

Minimalist Design Philosophy

From its inception, The Studio House aimed to cater to essential needs while minimizing costs and creating a homely ambiance. This approach reflects a lifestyle choice emphasizing intentional simplicity, offering an ideal solution for Sri Lanka’s construction cost challenges. Innovative structural elements, including grid-patterned box bars and corrugated Zn-Al sheets for cladding, contribute to strength, stability, and aesthetic appeal while reducing expenses.

Sustainable Construction

The project exemplifies a thoughtful approach to sustainable architecture, with a concrete substructure and steel superstructure. Exterior and interior coverings utilize roofing sheets and cement plaster boards, respectively, with thermal insulation to mitigate heat gain. Cross ventilation and a narrow building breadth enhance interior cooling, while the building’s orientation minimizes heat gain by placing shorter sides on the east-west axis.

Integration with Nature

Efficient space utilization, energy efficiency, and a minimal environmental footprint characterize The Studio House’s sustainable architecture details. The project’s reduced footprint, essential spaces, and expansive garden harmonize with nature, promoting a holistic vision for sustainable living. Additionally, the structure’s lightweight design, affordability, and innovative principles further enhance its sustainability credentials.

Social Responsibility

From a socially responsible architecture perspective, The Studio House reduces its environmental impact, promotes affordability and social equity, and encourages adaptability and flexibility. By embodying a socially responsible approach within the “living big in a small house” concept, this project presents an enlightening solution to housing challenges in Sri Lanka, offering a holistic vision for sustainable living.
