Bostanlı Footbridge & Sunset Lounge A Blend of Urban Architecture and Natural Setting

Bostanlı Footbridge and Bostanlı Sunset Lounge, designed by Studio Evren Başbuğ Architects, are integral parts of the ‘Karşıkıyı’ concept within the ‘İzmirSea’ coastal regeneration project. These architectural interventions, located in close proximity to each other, have transformed the area where Bostanlı Creek meets the bay into a new, integrated coastal attraction. Since its opening in July 2016, this site has become a beloved public space in Karşıyaka, İzmir.

Bostanlı Footbridge

Aligned with the ‘Karşıkıyı’ masterplan, the Bostanlı Footbridge connects both sides of Bostanlı Creek, completing a crucial segment of the continuous coastal promenade. Its slightly bow-shaped longitudinal section and specially designed girder geometry allow small boats to pass underneath, while providing access to a floating pontoon. The bridge’s asymmetrical cross-section, featuring cascading thermo-wood surfaces on a steel frame, offers panoramic views of the bay and the city. Beyond mere functionality, it serves as a public leisure and attraction point, enhancing its surroundings.

Bostanlı Sunset Lounge

Located on one of the few coastal fragments in Karşıyaka facing west, the Bostanlı Sunset Lounge consists of cascading thermo-wood covered platforms. These platforms create an inviting urban surface between the tree-covered artificial slope and the embankment itself. The lounge’s simple and fluent surface geometry encourages visitors to experience the sunset and the sea directly. Similar to the footbridge, the wide ash wood covered surface evokes a welcoming sensation, inviting city residents to rediscover the tradition of watching the sunset together.

Urban Interventions and Their Impact

Both the Bostanlı Footbridge and Sunset Lounge uphold the principles of the ‘Karşıkıyı’ proposal and the master plan for Karşıyaka’s coastline. These installations serve as genuine ‘counter-spaces’, fostering new urban experiences and reflecting the social, geographical, and historical context of their unique location. They align perfectly with the ‘Easy Way of Living’ vision established by the ‘İzmirSea’ coastal regeneration project.

In conclusion, the Bostanlı Footbridge and Sunset Lounge by Studio Evren Başbuğ Architects are not just architectural interventions but integral parts of a larger effort to transform İzmir’s coastline into vibrant, inclusive spaces that blend harmoniously with their natural surroundings.
