In 2023, TJAD Original Design Studio unveiled the Changting Station, a pivotal component of Hangzhou’s Binjiang District waterfront revitalization project. Led by Ming Zhang, Zi Zhang, and Bo Chen, the project integrates historical significance with contemporary functionality to create a vibrant public space along the Qiantang River.
Restoring Ancient Traditions
Inspired by ancient rest stations, the Changting Station offers a modern interpretation of traditional hospitality. Spanning 500 meters along the riverbank, it features ten stations equipped with rest areas, toilets, and commercial spaces, fostering community engagement and promoting riverfront accessibility.
Redefining Waterfront Spaces
Unlike previous projects, the Changting Station faced challenges posed by a wide river and limited shading opportunities. To maximize space utilization, the design team transformed the area under the eaves into a semi-outdoor urban oasis, offering panoramic views of the river and creating a dynamic riverside experience.
Embracing Cultural Heritage
Located near Xixing Ancient Town, the Changting Station pays homage to traditional pavilions while embracing modern architectural elements. The two-story steel-wood structure integrates cultural displays, tea rooms, and public amenities, reflecting the region’s rich history and cultural heritage.
Harmonizing Structure and Nature
With a length of 100 meters and a width of 15 meters, the Changting Station combines sleek wooden upper levels with robust rammed earth foundations. Supported by V-shaped steel columns and wooden roof trusses, the structure embodies both strength and elegance, seamlessly blending with its natural surroundings.
Fostering Community Engagement
As a focal point for cultural exchange and recreation, the Changting Station aims to reinvigorate the waterfront with a vibrant array of activities. From fishing trade wharfs to linear indoor-outdoor spaces, the station promises to reconnect residents with their heritage and foster a sense of community pride.
A Poetic Fusion of Architecture and Nature
Beyond its functional purpose, the Changting Station exemplifies the harmonious integration of architecture and nature. Through its transparent and fluid design, the station invites visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of their surroundings, creating a poetic narrative that celebrates the timeless connection between humanity and the environment.
In essence, the Changting Station stands as a testament to Hangzhou’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage while embracing the future of urban development along its picturesque waterfront.
