Bridging Neighborhoods: A Network of Footpaths
The project endeavors to establish a network of pedestrian footpaths, seamlessly connecting the hilly neighborhood of Monte Xisto to the serene banks of the River Leça. This initiative not only enhances urban connectivity but also showcases the potential of low-budget projects to revitalize hidden urban gems within cities.
Collaborative Endeavor
Over the course of a year, a multidisciplinary team comprising architects, local builders, artists, and numerous partners collaborated closely to bring the vision of Escadinhas Footpaths to fruition. The initial phase focused on the restoration of the steps leading to Rua das Escadinhas, a unique urban feature facilitating movement between different elevations within Monte Xisto. The rehabilitation efforts included repairs to the steps and handrails, as well as the addition of benches along the path, transforming it into a welcoming public space for rest and relaxation.
Reclaiming Ruins: Restoring Heritage
Continuing along the path towards the River Leça, the project team embarked on the restoration of an old ruin, converting it into a picturesque seating area nestled amidst nature. Through meticulous interventions, the site’s original charm was reinstated, undoing the effects of years of neglect. Benches were strategically placed throughout the site, inviting visitors to linger and engage, thereby fostering social interactions and community cohesion.
Promoting Healthy Neighborhoods
The Escadinhas Footpaths project was initiated as part of the Bairros Saudáveis initiative, with support from INSTITUTO, InResidence / Ágora – Cultura e Desporto, and União de Freguesias – Custóias, Leça do Balio e Guifões.
