In the bustling district of Eungbong-dong, Seongdong-gu, Seoul, a remarkable transformation has taken place beneath the Eungbong Bridge that spans the Jungnangcheon Stream. Led by YZA Architects, the revitalization of this once-neglected public space has given rise to Eungbong Terrace, a vibrant landmark that epitomizes the spirit of community engagement and public architecture.
Urban Context and Challenges
The site, nestled amidst residential clusters and adjacent to the Jungnangcheon, was marred by a one-lane road and a dimly lit underpass, rendering it uninviting and isolated. Despite efforts to create a sports facility for residents, the space remained underutilized and lacked vitality. Recognizing the need for a positive intervention, the architects embarked on a mission to reimagine the space as a beacon of light and activity within the neighborhood.
Vision for Transformation
Inspired by the transformative power of iconic landmarks such as Las Vegas and the revitalization of abandoned towns like Jeongseon in Gangwon-do, the architects sought to infuse Eungbong Terrace with a sense of grandeur and allure. The objective was clear: to turn the somber underpass into a lively destination that beckons visitors and instills a sense of pride among locals.
Eungbong Terrace: A Beacon of Light and Community
Eungbong Terrace emerges as a multi-functional cultural and leisure space, meticulously designed to captivate the imagination and foster community engagement. Dividing the expansive underpass into intimate pocket spaces, the terrace invites residents to gather and socialize while adhering to post-COVID-19 safety guidelines. The innovative roof sculpture, adorned with a flowing wave-like pattern, channels natural light during the day and transforms into an illuminated spectacle at night, knitting the entire space together in a mesmerizing display.
Embracing Human Scale and Connectivity
By reimagining the lower part of the overpass as a human-scale terrace, Eungbong Terrace blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces, inviting pedestrians to traverse its pathways and linger in its inviting ambiance. Serving as a visual landmark visible from every corner of the neighborhood, the terrace symbolizes the resilience and creativity of urban design in transforming neglected spaces into vibrant community hubs.
The unveiling of Eungbong Terrace marks a significant milestone in the ongoing evolution of urban spaces, exemplifying the potential for collaborative efforts to breathe new life into the fabric of cities and create enduring legacies for generations to come.
