In 2022, MNLA, in collaboration with various partners, successfully concluded the implementation of four pivotal projects outlined in the Hudson Square BID’s ambitious ten-year, $27M master plan for the public realm. The recent unveiling of the reconstructed Hudson Street marks a significant milestone in the revitalization efforts of this once-industrial downtown neighborhood in New York City.
Collaborative Efforts
The master plan, a joint endeavor with the Hudson Square BID, the NYC Department of Transportation, and the NYC Economic Development Corporation, aimed at fostering social, economic, and environmental sustainability within the community. What was once an industrial area has now transformed into a vibrant hub for the city’s creative industries, accommodating over 60,000 professionals in communication, new media, and design sectors.
Key Projects Overview
- Hudson Street Reconstruction (Completed 2022):
- This transformative project turned Hudson Street into a grand thoroughfare, expanding sidewalks and introducing new amenities along its seven-block stretch. The enhancements prioritize pedestrian safety, facilitate bicycle and vehicular traffic, and promote connectivity. With over 8,000 square feet of green spaces filled with trees and shrubs, the project implements sustainable urban forestry practices to maximize stormwater capture and support tree health. Additionally, new benches and designated spaces for sidewalk cafes enhance public enjoyment.
- Hudson Square Streetscape Standard (Completed 2022):
- Recognized for its sustainability, this initiative has redefined the streetscape of the district by incorporating 500 trees and implementing innovative sidewalk tree planting systems. Structural soil, porous aggregate, permeable pavers, and distinctive tree guards contribute to capturing stormwater, increasing biomass, and enhancing real estate values.
- Spring Street Park (Completed 2018):
- Serving as the gateway to Hudson Square, this half-acre triangular open space was redesigned to accommodate various activities and provide a tranquil retreat for local workers and residents.
- Freeman Plaza East and West (Completed 2013 and 2014, Renovated in 2018 and 2021):
- Formerly underutilized spaces near the Holland Tunnel approach routes, Freeman Plaza East and West have been transformed into vibrant green spaces. These areas now offer a range of activities, including yoga sessions, music events, and recreational amenities like the Noguchi play sculpture and solar Wi-Fi charging stations.
Through meticulous planning and execution, MNLA’s master plan has breathed new life into Hudson Square, creating inviting public spaces that enrich the lives of residents and visitors alike while fostering a sense of community and sustainability.
