Revitalizing Cultural Spaces: Common Ground Collective Garden

Nestled atop a limestone ridge in the picturesque Hefer valley of Israel, Beit Harishonim house stands as a testament to the region’s rich cultural heritage. After years of neglect, this historic house has undergone a remarkable transformation, emerging as a vibrant cultural and art center. Central to this revitalization effort is the creation of the Common Ground Collective Garden—an innovative project led by el.em studio.

Embracing Community Collaboration

Common Ground represents more than just a garden; it embodies a collective vision for community engagement and cultural renewal. Rather than a static architectural feature, the garden is a dynamic process—a testament to the power of collective action and shared stewardship. Through open calls and local publications, nearby residents have been actively involved in every stage of the garden’s development, from ground tightening to concrete casting and wild plant cultivation.

Design Concept

The layout of the garden reflects a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics, drawing inspiration from traditional English garden design principles. A central pathway meanders through the garden, leading visitors to hidden seating areas and panoramic viewpoints. Custom concrete-cast terrazzo elements, including intimate benches and a reflective pool, pay homage to the site’s historical significance while inviting playful interaction between visitors, wildlife, and nature.

Ecological Sustainability

In keeping with its commitment to environmental stewardship, the Common Ground garden features a diverse array of native plants and trees sourced from the Hefer Valley region. These indigenous species not only enhance the garden’s biodiversity but also serve as a living testament to the area’s natural heritage. Additionally, the garden’s design includes provisions for water drainage and conservation, ensuring sustainable management of resources for future generations.

Ongoing Engagement

Far from being a static space, Common Ground is envisioned as a dynamic hub for community engagement and cultural exchange. Future events and activities will bring together a diverse array of participants, including artists, travelers, volunteers, and gardening enthusiasts. As a living testament to the power of collaboration and creativity, the garden will continue to evolve and thrive as an ongoing project—a symbol of renewal and resilience in the heart of the Hefer valley.
