Unity Preschool, situated within a conventional office building in Hangzhou, China, transcends the boundaries of traditional educational spaces. As a non-profit Emilia Reggio-inspired kindergarten, it serves a vital role in supporting working families and providing essential daycare services. Studio Jia took on the challenge of designing a comprehensive school campus, integrating classrooms, libraries, a central piazza, a school kitchen, an art studio, office space, a performance stage, meeting rooms, a reception area, a café, and a multi-function room.
Architectural Harmony with Educational Philosophy
At the core of the project lies a meticulous integration of the Emilia Reggio philosophy into both architectural and interior elements. The design principles prioritize adaptability, fostering flexible, open, and child-centric spaces that encourage child-led learning and spontaneous interaction. A key feature is the expansive central piazza, serving as a vibrant hub with a performance stage, an art gallery integrated library, and an open kitchen.
Breaking Conventions for Child Autonomy
Departing from traditional campus designs, Unity Preschool embraces a layout without physical walls segregating programs in the piazza. This intentional design choice grants students the freedom to navigate and orchestrate their daily school lives autonomously, fostering a sense of independence and responsibility.
Innovative Use of Space and Light
Architectural ingenuity is evident in the maximization of natural light, challenging the enclosed nature of the existing office building. A multi-floor climbing structure, roof light wells, and a glass-ceilinged central staircase with integrated steel slides introduce playful transitions between levels. These elements not only facilitate movement but also create dynamic light patterns throughout the day, offering a visually stimulating environment for exploration.
