Enhancing Elderly Care: The New Day Center for The Elderly

In the heart of Macas, Ecuador, the New Day Center for The Elderly stands as a beacon of cultural architecture and healthcare innovation. Designed by Side FX Arquitectura, this facility is part of the Territorial Development Projects program initiated by the Ecuadorian government, aimed at addressing basic needs and enhancing social investment in rural areas.

Context and Location

Situated in the General Proaño district within the Morona canton, the New Day Center for The Elderly serves as a vital resource in the Ecuadorian Amazon region. The district experiences a predominantly warm-humid climate, reflecting the unique environmental context in which the center operates.

Redefining Infrastructure

Tasked with replacing the existing infrastructure, which lacked the warmth and functionality of a care center, Side FX Arquitectura embarked on a mission to create a dignified and spacious environment for the elderly. The new facility offers improved quality of life through access to group activities, healthcare services, and a supportive community atmosphere.

Design Features

Designed as a single-level structure, the facility ensures safe and comfortable access for elderly clients. It comprises essential amenities such as medical and dental offices, multipurpose rooms, administrative areas, a kitchen, dining facilities, and bathrooms. The U-shaped design integrates seamlessly with preexisting structures on communal property, fostering a sense of continuity and connection.

Embracing Community and Privacy

The layout of the facility delineates public and private areas, ensuring security and protection for occupants while inviting community engagement. An interior patio serves as a welcoming space for visitors, fostering contemplation and recreation. Inspired by local architecture, the roof design emphasizes the entrance and individual areas, creating a distinctive identity for the center.

Honoring Local Architecture

With a commitment to honesty and austerity, the architecture of the New Day Center for The Elderly reflects a deep appreciation for local materials and building traditions. Each material is thoughtfully incorporated to reinterpret the region’s architectural heritage, creating a space that resonates with the cultural identity of its surroundings.

Through thoughtful design and a focus on community wellbeing, the New Day Center for The Elderly exemplifies the intersection of cultural architecture and healthcare, providing a nurturing environment for elderly residents in Macas, Ecuador.
