Located on Jiming Island amidst the vast sea, the Cliff Café and Tower House by TAO – Trace Architecture Office epitomizes the harmony between architecture and the natural landscape. Crafted to integrate seamlessly with the craggy mountains and expansive sea horizon, this architectural marvel offers a unique retreat from urban life.
Merging with the Landscape
Perched on the edge of a cliff, the concrete structure of the Cliff Café and Tower House resembles a natural rock formation. Anchored into the rocky terrain, one end of the building extends outward, mirroring the land’s contours and pointing towards the sea. In contrast, the opposite end juts out from the cliff’s edge, creating a captivating interplay between human intervention and the raw beauty of nature.
Immersive Experience
Descending into the building, visitors are enveloped by the heavy concrete walls, evoking the sensation of entering a mountain’s interior. As they progress, they emerge onto a cantilevered platform that extends over the sea, offering a breathtaking panorama. The sensation of floating on the water is heightened by the open floor design, providing an awe-inspiring perspective of the cliff’s height.
Tranquil Retreat
Hidden within the building is a secluded meditation space accessible through a dimly lit tunnel. Here, guests can find solace amidst the mountain’s embrace, basking in the natural light filtering through a skylight above. It’s a serene sanctuary where one can reconnect with oneself and the surrounding landscape.
Architectural Gestures
The Cliff Café and Tower House is a testament to architectural innovation, with the café serving as a horizontal plane reaching towards the skyline, while the Tower House stands as a vertical volume reaching towards the heavens. Despite its compact footprint, the Tower House offers a multi-dimensional living experience, with living spaces arranged vertically to maximize views of the sea from different vantage points.
Reconnecting with Nature
Through its thoughtful design, the building seamlessly integrates with its surroundings, inviting occupants to immerse themselves in the elemental forces of earth and sky. Whether gazing out from the Tower House’s panoramic windows or savoring a moment of reflection in the cliffside café, guests are reminded of the profound beauty and serenity of the natural world.
