Preserving Tradition: Misumi Annex Renovation by Studio AMB

The Misumi Annex Renovation project, undertaken by Studio AMB, involves the transformation of a 120-year-old traditional wooden house in the Misumi region of Shimane, Japan, into a modern accommodation facility. Led by architects Haruki Nakayama and Yosuke Tsukamoto, the renovation aimed to preserve the historical charm of the building while incorporating contemporary elements to enhance its functionality.

Architectural Heritage

Originally constructed as a detached house for the local landlord, the building boasts a picturesque location overlooking the sea and nestled against a hill. Its design, characterized by a stone foundation and minimal external walls, creates a semi-outdoor ambiance, allowing the natural elements to permeate the space.

Fusion of Tradition and Modernity

The client’s vision for the project was to provide visitors with an authentic experience of the fishing village’s climate and culture, characterized by its distinctive stone-tile roofs. Studio AMB reimagined traditional Japanese architecture by integrating elements such as the earthen floor, a hallmark of local heritage, and consolidating daily life functions like cooking and bathing into a single ground-floor unit.

Innovative Design Approach

A key feature of the renovation is the creation of an open yet enclosed earthen floor space, designed to foster interaction and connection with the surrounding environment. This space serves as a communal area where guests can experience the region’s unique climate while engaging in cultural activities. During periods of low occupancy, it also doubles as a gathering spot for locals, contributing to the vibrant community atmosphere.

Conclusion

The Misumi Annex Renovation project exemplifies Studio AMB’s commitment to preserving architectural heritage while embracing innovation. By seamlessly blending tradition with modernity, the renovated accommodation facility offers guests an immersive glimpse into the rich cultural tapestry of the Misumi region, ensuring a memorable and authentic experience for visitors and locals alike.
