The Bolder project, initiated in 2020, stands as a testament to the seamless integration of architectural innovation and natural splendor. Conceived by Snøhetta, the project comprises four cabins elevated above the ground, meticulously designed to immerse guests in the breathtaking beauty of the surrounding landscape while blurring the boundaries between indoor comfort and outdoor grandeur.
Embracing Nature’s Embrace
Nestled on the edge of Lysefjorden, the cabins—Stylten, Myra, Stjerna, and Eldhuset—embrace the rugged terrain with a minimalist footprint, allowing the natural panorama to take center stage. Elevated on concrete pillars, each cabin features expansive glass facades that dissolve the barriers between interior and exterior, offering guests uninterrupted views of the fjord and the majestic mountains beyond.
Crafting Serenity Within
Stepping inside ‘The Bolder Cabins,’ guests are enveloped in an atmosphere of serenity and tranquility. The interior design ethos revolves around minimalism, with a focus on natural and durable materials in earthy hues and organic textures. From the sleek lines of the furniture to the rough concrete flooring, every element is thoughtfully curated to enhance the meditative flow of the space, inviting guests to unwind and reconnect with nature.
Merging Form and Function
Each cabin boasts an upper floor housing a kitchen and dining area by Vipp, while the ground floor features a built-in bed and bathroom. Wood, marble, and leather emerge as recurring materials, infusing the interiors with warmth and character. Notably, the use of untreated red Cedar for the exteriors ensures a seamless blend with the rocky landscape, while oak wood interiors offer a tactile richness, providing guests with a sensory experience that evolves with each visit.
A Sustainable Vision
In keeping with Snøhetta’s commitment to sustainability, ‘The Bolder Cabins’ are shaped from locally sourced materials, including wood and concrete aggregates from the surrounding site. The cabins are designed to minimize their ecological footprint, with off-grid amenities powered by naturally sourced spring water and renewable energy sources. Additionally, the construction process prioritizes environmental stewardship, with trees felled during construction repurposed for other aspects of the project.
A Harmonious Integration
The cabins are meticulously crafted to merge seamlessly with their surroundings, evoking the organic forms of the landscape. From the mirrored roof undersides to the asymmetrically placed overlights, each element is carefully calibrated to enhance the sensation of weightlessness and immersion in nature. Both the interior and exterior walls merge into a singular form, offering guests a cocoon-like retreat where clean lines and unobstructed views reign supreme.
A Vision for the Future
Beyond the cabins, the Bolder project envisages the addition of a lounge and gourmet restaurant, poised to offer guests an immersive culinary experience rooted in locally sourced ingredients. With its commitment to sustainability, innovation, and harmonious integration with nature, ‘The Bolder Cabins’ stand as a beacon of architectural excellence and environmental stewardship—a sanctuary where guests can retreat, recharge, and reconnect with the wild beauty of the Norwegian landscape.
