Situated at the entrance of a newly constructed Shikumen-style commercial district in Shanghai, the Weaving Double Helix installation stands as a captivating fusion of nostalgia and futuristic aesthetics. Designed by HCCH Studio, this striking artwork serves as both an inaugural exhibition centerpiece and a remarkable city gateway, welcoming visitors with its unique charm.
Redefining Public Space
In a district dedicated to local cuisine and community engagement, the decision to install a hanging artwork above the main promenade reflects a deliberate departure from traditional plaza sculptures or entrance arches. The Weaving Double Helix offers a dynamic reinterpretation of public space, inviting passersby to immerse themselves in its captivating presence.
A Symbolic Design
The installation comprises two gracefully curved double helices, forming an X-shaped steel frame suspended from gable walls by steel cables. Reminiscent of Shanghai’s iconic breakfast delicacy, youtiao, or a festive dragon heralding the Lunar New Year, the structure evokes a sense of cultural resonance. Its fluid surface design offers an ever-changing perspective, imbuing the district with a sense of dynamism and movement.
Craftsmanship and Innovation
At the heart of the installation lies meticulous craftsmanship and innovative design. Comprising 1,300 elliptical acrylic double-sided illuminated rings, the structure pays homage to traditional weaving patterns, symbolizing cultural continuity and heritage. Handcrafted on-site, each ring is intricately connected by 5cm-wide weaving straps, creating a mesmerizing interplay of light and texture.
