Introduction
In response to the challenges posed by the pandemic lockdown, Thor House emerges as a pioneering project aimed at reimagining living spaces. Designed to provide ample room for both family life and work, this project breathes new life into a 70 square meter house, transforming it into a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics.
Transformative Design Approach
The essence of Thor House lies in the innovative approach to space utilization. By removing all interior partitions, the architects created an expansive common area that seamlessly integrates the kitchen, dining room, and living room. This transformation not only maximizes the available space but also fosters a sense of openness and connectivity.
Structural Innovation
At the core of Thor House’s design is the construction of a steel structure warehouse spanning from party wall to party wall. This warehouse, compliant with current regulations, provides a floor area of 130 square meters and a maximum interior height of 6 meters. Flanking the warehouse are two interior volumes of lower height, dedicated to bedrooms, bathrooms, and storage rooms, ensuring privacy for the residents.
Amplifying Space Perception
Despite its modest footprint, Thor House creates an illusion of spaciousness through strategic design elements. The double interior height of the common space enhances the perception of openness, making the area feel larger than its actual dimensions.
Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Transition
The lower level of Thor House seamlessly connects with the backyard, creating a fluid transition between indoor and outdoor living spaces. The backyard, adorned with low-water consumption plant species, reflects a commitment to sustainability and environmental consciousness.
Balancing Security and Transparency
Towards the street, Thor House presents a hermetic facade that ensures security without compromising transparency. A large rectangular oculus provides indirect light while offering a glimpse of the front yard to passersby. The contrast between the open and blind panels is accentuated by the use of charred wood boards, adding a touch of contemporary elegance to the exterior.

Thor House stands as a testament to innovative design and adaptive reuse, showcasing how thoughtful architecture can transform living environments.
