A Pandemic Project
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the owners of this former multi-family dwelling embarked on a transformative journey without ever stepping foot inside. Despite its dilapidated state, the allure of the charming facade sparked a vision for a complete renovation, allowing the building to be meticulously tailored to their preferences.
Ideal Location
Situated in Mortsel, Belgium, the house boasts a southeast-facing urban garden with picturesque views of a nearby church, a verdant walking park, and two majestic old beech trees. With no rear neighbors to contend with, the location provided an idyllic backdrop for the renovation.
Transformation and Expansion
What was once two outdated apartments has now been seamlessly melded into a single-family home, accentuated by the addition of an extra floor. This strategic expansion not only enhanced the streetscape but also afforded ample opportunity to optimize every space for long-term living comfort.
Overcoming Obstacles
While the initial plan aimed to preserve the main load-bearing structures, the renovation eventually evolved into a comprehensive overhaul. With only the front facade and partition walls remaining, meticulous modifications were implemented to introduce abundant natural light into the narrow row house.
Maximizing Light and Space
Addressing the central, darker section of the house, vertical circulation was repositioned to create a light shaft, while additional skylights and expansive windows were strategically installed. These thoughtful interventions ensure a luminous and airy ambiance throughout the entire dwelling.
Sustainable Design
Driven by a preference for color and natural materials, the design interventions were meticulously curated to align with the owners’ vision. By securing finishes and craftsmen early in the project’s inception, the foundation was laid for an environmentally conscious and aesthetically pleasing home. Extensive self-construction efforts further bolstered the technical and energy-efficient aspects of the house, culminating in a sustainable living space for years to come.
