Revitalizing Urban Spaces: A Master Plan in Basel

In 2018, Esch Sintzel Architekten embarked on a transformative journey to revitalize urban spaces in Basel, Switzerland. With a focus on creating a vibrant and integrated community, the project aimed to reinvigorate the city’s inner courtyards while preserving its historical character.

Urban Renewal

Over the years, annex buildings had encroached upon the courtyards of Basel’s inner city, disrupting the harmony of the urban landscape. In response, the project sought to remove these structures, reclaiming the courtyards as communal spaces for residents. However, it also aimed to preserve the sociotopes where living and working coexisted, fostering a sense of community among neighbors.

Embracing Tradition

Drawing inspiration from the commercial courtyards of the past, the new building embraced the spirit of bygone eras while adapting to modern needs. Constructed with wood, the building echoed the light and low-profile design of its predecessors, paying homage to the history of the area. Its urban positioning ensured a seamless integration into the surrounding landscape, maintaining a sense of continuity with the past.

Unique Identity

The project celebrated the distinct identity of the streets bordering the planning area. Hebelstrasse, serving as a link road to St. Johann-Vorstadt, exuded a formal and structured ambiance. In contrast, Maiengasse, originally a humble pathway, retained its informal charm with small buildings lining its streets. The design of the buildings reflected these differences, with Hebelstrasse featuring a closed-off structure and Maiengasse embracing a more open and heterogeneous fabric.

Harmonious Integration

Through thoughtful design and urban planning, the project aimed to create a harmonious blend of past and present. By reinterpreting historical elements and adapting them to contemporary needs, Esch Sintzel Architekten sought to create a dynamic and inclusive community space. The result was a master plan that honored the city’s heritage while paving the way for a brighter and more interconnected future.
