In 2016, the Parks and Recreation Department of West Lafayette embarked on the planning of a new community center, soliciting input from local residents on various aspects, ranging from site planning to gym layout. The central design vision that emerged was one of inclusivity—a facility that would cater to every member of the community.
A Welcoming Haven
“This is an all-encompassing wellness and recreation center that is instantly welcoming, bright and open, and unique to this community,” says Wellness Center Director Kevin Noe. The design prioritizes inclusivity, featuring restrooms and locker rooms accessible to all members and visitors—a pioneering initiative in the state for a facility of this nature.
Architectural Features
The sweeping roof serves as a striking entrance, unifying the program spaces along the building’s length. A central atrium acts as the building’s heart, offering a gathering space for residents before or after programs. Second-floor terraces provide views of Cumberland Park, offering areas for exercise or relaxation. Principles of Universal Design permeate the building, ensuring accessibility for individuals and families of all ages and abilities.
Prioritizing Safety and Security
Visual connections and ease of movement are paramount to safety and security within the locker rooms and restrooms. Clear glass partitions and openings provide visibility to washing and locker areas, while signage delineates zones for changing rooms and showers. Full-length doors enhance privacy and safety, reflecting the fundamental need for inclusivity and belonging.
Community Feedback and Support
Initial community surveys underscored strong support for the inclusive facilities, lauding their ease of use, wayfinding clarity, and security measures. As one user expressed, it symbolizes “appreciation for all.” Dylan Fischer, project architect with Perkins&Will, emphasizes the importance of inclusiveness in every phase of planning for health and wellness centers.
Sustainable Design
From the stone façade to the timber roof of the aquatics center, the design resonates with the facility’s natural park setting, emphasizing conservation and sustainability. Extensive access to natural light and visual connections to the park aim to enhance physical and mental well-being, aligning with the core mission of a wellness center.
